Newham Sustainable Schools EcoNetwork

The EcoNetwork brings together all the individuals and organisations that can help you on your eco-journey, from the LBN Energy Unit right through to “sustainable poo” resources via Thames Water! We meet to discuss the NSS programme, sharing our experiences and looking at common problems which schools experience on their sustainability journeys.

We will be posting their smiling faces and contact details soon.
Details of some organisations we have worked with are below. Some of the names you will recognise and a few you won't!.
In the meantime please contact us here with any queries or requests for support.

Ray Lagden,
Maintenance Delivery Manager, Thames Water

Ray has worked for Thames Water for 29 years. He started as an apprentice mechanical fitter moving to supervise and lead maintenance teams in the East London area delivering planned, corrective and emergency maintenance to sewage works and sewage pumping stations, ensuring equipment is maintained and repaired, delivering a robust service to the customer. His experience and expertise are in waste water and he is a volunteer community speaker for Thames Water, mainly speaking in schools in East and North London. He is an ex Rugby player and referee, and keen cricketer and golfer (weather permitting).

Davina Alvares,
Contracts Administrator, Procurement Team, LBN
Gillian Shine, Buying Assistant, Procurement Team, LBN
Our work at Strategic Procurement reflects the Council’s steer on delivering a“cleaner, greener” Newham through an approach
to procurement that is both financially and environmentally sustainable. Most Newham Schools use the Council's corporate contracts e.g. paper, photocopiers, stationery etc. which provide a range of products which are recycled and/or environmentally friendly.
Davina is responsible for managing some of the corporate contracts that are currently being utilised by LBN with the potential opportunity for schools. Sustainability has been considered within these and we pride ourselves on this. Davina
recycle frequently at home and encourages others to do so as well. She has a compost bin to recycle all vegetable scraps to produce compost for the garden.
Gillian is responsible for procuring the corporate contracts that are being utilised by the schools and looking where we can be sustainable in these contracts. Gillian actively recycles where she can and is conscious of her impact on the planet.

Community Links
Community Links  are an innovative east London charity, running a wide range of community projects for 30,000 people
every year. Based in Newham, they have over 30 years of experience working with local people to support children, young people, adults and families. Through their national work, they share lessons with government and community groups
across the country to achieve social change.

Carbon Footprint Detective Agency
CFDA is a joint project of Immediate Theatre with Newham Sustainable Schools. It started life as a drama production for primary pupils aged 7 to 11 in 2008 – and subsequently developed into a project consisting of a package of shows, lessons
and drama workshops, designed to embed behaviour change in schools – which would lead to saving energy.  The CFDA
show is a cartoon-like caper in which the four energy-using ‘Wasters’ (Pollution Penny, Chuck, and The Foot Fiend, led by the wicked Dr Electron) are thwarted by three experienced detectives from the Carbon Footprint Detective Agency (Chief
Big Toe, Detective Danni and Sergeant Supersaver) and their newest, raw recruit, Tim Can.  Pupils follow the story
of novice Tim Can, as he tries to prove himself as a detective, takes on the Wasters single-handed, and is saved by his friends. Then the whole CFDA work together to vanquish Pollution Penny, the littering Chuck and the fuel-guzzling Foot Fiend, and to reduce Dr Electron, the maddest electricity-user of all time, to a manageable size.
